The story of Skyler Phillips took a turn for the better today.  After having his offer pulled back by the OSU Beavers the big man from Churchill was hoping it was a matter of time before someone came a knocking.  Lucky for him today was the day.

Here is the first story we ran on Phillips where we covered what happened with him and the OSU offer.

Idaho State read about Phillips on our War Room 2013 recruiting list that we emailed out and contacted him today.

“They called and asked for my transcripts and ACT scores this morning,” said Skyler.  “So my Mom sent them over email.”

After doing a little more checking on Phillips the Bengals staff decided they could not let a guy like this get away so they took a shot.

“Later in the day the Coaches called me to let me know they were making me an offer and wanted me to come out for an official visit.  Tonight we will see if we can make that happen!”

Idaho State is located in Pocatello, Idaho and has a really nice campus with an Indoor Dome where the NWPR staff has attended the Idaho State Championships.  We can see how a guy like Phillips would thrive in a place like that.  Not that he would not thrive anywhere.

So how is he feeling about this with signing day 8 days away?

“I feel good.  I am back in the game so to say.  After going through a recruitment with OSU so fast this Summer this is just part of getting going.  I am grateful for the offer and have some other schools checking in too.  But as I said all I need is a chance to play and now I have that which feels good.”

Next up is an in home visit with the Bengals Coaching staff on Wednesday.   The good part of this offer is that Idaho State has tougher academic standards then most schools because of some grade sanctions set down on them by the NCAA.  So any school looking can take comfort that his GPA (3.177) and his ACT were high enough to pass that test.

Right now PSU is looking close at his film, New Mexico State, Montana State,  NAU, and WOU and a handful of others are looking.  Even the UW Huskies are having a look and rightfully so.

Any Veteran of this signing day madness knows that a good number of recruited athletes are not going to make the grade.  That can send teams scrambling for options.  And they will need options that can help them.  This year Phillips is that guy because his ability and size rate him among the top few athletes in the West.

ISU made a good move here today and Phillips is “Back in the game”.  A game that is not always fair or fun.  But it is the one that he and all recruits have to play!

Best wishes to Skyler Phillips the next few days and congrats to ISU for coming after Oregon and Washington’s Best!
