In game one of our 3 game jaunt this past Saturday we headed out to Hillsboro Stadium and had a chance to watch the 4 A OSAA State Title Game.  The 2013 Championship pitted  Ridgeview, a new school out in Redmond (OR), against Cottage Grove.  The Ravens were the underdog early perhaps but hung in the game long enough to pull away late and take the Championship 50-31.

Down 17-0 early the Ravens made some adjustments to handle the onslaught of passes thrown by the Lion’s QB Scotty Hitner.  He came into the game leading the region in passing yards and had almost 3500 yards in total offense.  But unlike his normally efficient self  Hitner threw 5 picks almost equaling his season total of 7.  However 2 or 3 of those picks were from tipped balls; so all credit to the Ravens defense.  Despite posting almost 600 yards of offense and pushing the ball all over the field the Lions could not convert on big plays late and left some point out there.

The Ravens got going thanks to their dynamic duo of  Senior Wide Receiver Jack Bowman who scored on two long passes and Senior RB Boomer Flemming who rushed for 160 yards and 2 TD’s.  They also got help from Taner Stevens who added 114 yards and a TD.

What impressed us the most was the line play on both sides of the ball for the Ravens; Head Coach Andy Codding has those big boys blowing holes and putting up pressure.  Their use of hands in the passing lanes in particular impressed us.  They clearly had the size advantage and like most great teams the offense and defense start from the line play.

There is a lot we could write about the many individuals in this game but the teams are both so loaded it would be exhaustive.  The Lions will miss Hitner who is a special athlete that most schools will not see in a decade or more.  His leadership and vision helped the team get to the finals in a year that many felt they would not make it at all.  A great season to be sure.

Enjoy our look back at the 4A State Final as well as an interview with Boomer Fleming and a link to almost 200 Pictures!
