Marysville-Pilchuck Football Stars Moving On As Shoemaker Shakes The NW Up

Coach Ian Shoemaker barely hit the ground at CWU and got his office set up before he grabbed the car keys and hit the road.  We are getting reports from kids all over the NW that Coach Shoemaker and his staff have been busy making visits.  As the new Coach of the Wildcats he has a big job to do taking over the helm late in the recruiting process.  This will not prove too much of an issue for he and his staff as the cupboards in State are full of top tier talent.

So many kids this season are still waiting and hoping for something to come through and it has been tough to watch.   In the past few years we have seen CWU  get anywhere from 15-25 guys who are all in the All State caliber bracket.  Winning a D2 title is on the new Coach’s mind no doubt.  CWU can do it with the sort of athletes the State can power them with.

Coach ian Shoemaker is on the recruiting trail and CWU is looking to power up the team this season with in State kids.

Shoemaker joins the Wildcats after six seasons as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. The NCAA Division II university is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  Shoemaker has led the Huskies to the Division II national playoffs three times in the last four seasons.

Under Shoemaker’s leadership, Francois said CWU hopes to continue its dominance of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and compete at the national level on a consistent basis. CWU has won the conference championship in seven of the 11 football-playing seasons of the conference.

Up North at Marysville- Pilchuck Football the Tomahawks have been enjoying some very productive seasons these past few years.  This years magical run to 10-0 featured some amazing games and the play of super Junior Running Back Austin Joyner.  He and Senior QB Jake Luton (Idaho Commit) set up the offense to be potent and a wide array of other contributors joined in on both sides of the ball for Head Coach Brandon Carson and the Tomahawks.

Two of those guys are Dante Fields (DE/WR/H Back) and Deion Stell (WR- Corner Back).  The two stalwart Seniors were All League and Honorable mention All State kids and did a great job at the Northwest Elite Football Camp run by Cole Morgan and Eddie Behringer last June.  Shoemaker picked up on both kids and made both of them an offer to come out to Ellensburg and play a little “Foosball” as Mrs. Helen Boucher (Boo-Shey) calls it.  And right now that may end up being where these guys go.

“I am really excited to have an offer from CWU,” said Fields who we spoke to today.  “Coach came by the school and we all talked and he made me a nice offer to cover a good chunk of my schooling.  I have dreamed about playing college football for a long time and it has been hard trying to find a fit.  This looks to me like it could be it!”

He will visit the Wildcats on February 1st and says he and Stell as well as a litany of top Washington talent will be there.  It is going to a fun weekend for these guys to see CWU and what Shoemaker and his staff have in store.  Signing day is the 5th of February and Coaches have a 3 day blackout on any contact going into that day.  All the  boys will have time to think on the way home from Ellensburg and over Superbowl Sunday.  Then it all comes down to signing and a FAX.

Stell we have loved for years.  He has always shown tremendous hands and feet and is in our book is one of the finest two way players in the State.  So he will be a great get for Wildcats!

“Deion will be playing DB and be a returner. Dante Fields who was an absolute stud for us at WR and DE will be going to CWU as a TE.   So this week He was offered by CWU, hit the game winning free throws and today is his birthday that’s a good week! We are working on getting Chris Jones somewhere. Hes talkng to WOU and Eastern Oregon,” said  NWPR guest analyst Coach Brian Hoorn who works with the team and is a major factor in getting the word out on all players up in that far Northern reach of the State.

Let me say something to you all.  Parents and kids and the casual fan I speak to often express their beliefs to me and others about kids.  There is so much focus on a “D1” label.  That said Division 2 football is almost no drop off from Division 1.  The main difference might be a 10% variation on proto-type size and speed.  But the difference is not that much.  It is hard to become a college football player at any level.  For kids that go to Division 2 we all need to recognize that is huge.  It is big time.

One small school kid out of Montesano High School walked this path and went to CWU graduating in 2011.  His name is Adam Bighill.   Tonight while I was writing this Adam, a 5’10”-230 lbs wrecking ball, posted his highlights from his first year in the CFL where he tore it up for the BC Lions.  We love the Adam Bighill story and him as a person.  You will want to watch this!  For Deion and Dante and all the kids going up to CWU just know your at a great spot and we know your capable of anything.  Thanks to Adam for posting this and best wishes to Coach Ian Shoemaker and CWU.

Please report in with me guys if your moving on to college no matter where it is.  We will send a nice shout out for you and share with our football family too!  We are surely all with you! I may be reached at 503-799-8383 almost anytime.
