Lakewood HS Star Justin Peterson Rising Fast

Lakewood HS Star Justin Peterson Rising Fast

Last Memorial Day weekend Lakewood junior 3-sport sensation Justin Peterson further solidified his spot among the top guns for the class of 2013.  Peterson flew to the state 2A triple jump title with a leap of 44' 2.75".  Not bad for a young man who told us "He just started triple jumping seriously this spring."

To add to his high flying weekend show in Tacoma, Peterson took  2nd place in the high jump, when he soared over a personal best 6'5".  Justin's top triple jump of the season came at the prestigious Pasco Invite in April when he sailed to a winning mark of 44'6".  JP also runs on the 4×400 meter relay team, which just missed out on a trip to state. Peterson's top time over the 400 meters is 50.2.

Peterson has been a 2-year starting forward for Cougars roundball squad. The 6'1" 180 pound jumping jack led the Cougs in rebounding this past winter. So are these his top 2 sports you may ask?  Nope, football is his bread and butter. It is on the gridiron where this thoroughbred really stands out. Last fall JP led the Lakewood Cougars to a 10-2 mark and a spot in the state 2A quarterfinals.

The elusive Peterson had a hand in 36 total touchdowns for the Cougars last season. The rocket tossing dual-threat quarterback hit on 81 of 142 tosses for 1123 yards and 11 touchdowns through the airways.  He sliced and diced his way for 701 yards and 18 touchdowns rushing. The part time wide receiver garnered 16 balls for 350 yards and 5 touchdowns receiving as well. The jack of all trades Peterson returned 13 punts for 283 yards and a touchdown.  JP also led the ball club in interceptions with 6, returning them for 155 yards and a score.  He ran in 8 2-point conversions also.

Peterson, a big bopping safety, was 2nd on the Cougs squad with 64 tackles a season ago.  He was a 1st team All-Cascade conference pick at safety last year and a 2nd team selection as a sophomore.  Justin was also a 1st team all-league choice at quarterback as a junior, after being a 1st team all-conference wideout as a super sophomore.

He told us he is just starting spring football with his Lakewood crew.  The Cougars will go to Central Washington University for their annual team camp. He and his pack of hungry Cougs will also play in the UW 7 on 7 passing tourney, as well as their own 7 on 7 tourney at Lakewood in late July.  Individually he said, "I will be hitting camps at WSU, Eastern and a skills camp at Montana."

He says he is starting get a lot of mail from schools recruiting him; most of them as an athlete. With the gaudy numbers we just threw at you, I think you can see why!  We will follow up with all of you and Justin Peterson as the Summer gets going!
