The kid is big! And when he comes into recruiting events heads turn. And for Cody O'Connell it is something he is getting used to. He has attended two Junior Day events so far and has been one of the only guys to walk out of the event with an offer.
Today's event at Idaho was a fruitful one for the 6'8" massive O'Linemen from Wenatchee.
"The event at Idaho was really nice. The indoor facility was nice, we watched practice, had a bite to eat, and toured around a bit. After that we had a meeting with the Coaches and they made me an offer to play for them next year," said Cody who spent time with Head Coach Rob Akey, Coach Hunter, and Coach Shaw.
He left with a good impression and a sense that this is another good opportunity. The big man from East of the Mountains is happy with both of the offers and says he has not thought about putting any limitations on what league or division he ends up at.
"I want a chance to play. Anywhere I can do that I will be interested in," he added.
We asked Cody if the WSU offer, Coach Mike Leach, and playing in the Pac 12 was a decided advantage for them. While he feels great about the fit there at WSU and he likes O'Line Coach Clay McGuire he said he can not make a decision just on that.
"The school matters a lot. I will probably want to study engineering. So I will look at the school hard," he added.
WSU has him as an obvious fit at Offensive Tackle. He laughed when we asked if tha same applied to Idaho.
"I did not ask. I think so. But hey I can play wherever they need me too," he said laughing as we suggested Nose Guard might best suit his skills.
Next up? He is not 100% sure. He has a team camp in June, will hit the Nike NFTC Camp in June, and will visit Oregon for sure who has shown some good interest in him.
So far Wyoming, Oregon, and a couple other schools are in touch beyond WSU and Idaho. The fact is when he shows up at more and more colleges he will no doubt turn more and more heads. The kid is mobile, can move, and has the type of height and frame that coaches dream of having to build an offensive tackle around.
