Yakima’s Super Sophomore Slinger
Over on the Eastside of the mountains, looms a young super sophomore gunslinger, in Eisenhower of Yakima’s Chris Sawyer. The Ike quarterback had huge shoes to fill in those
of former Cadet signal caller Kolney Casell, a three year starter who is now playing at Southern Methodist University.
The young rocket launcher hasn’t missed a beat in running the Cadets high powered offense. The talented 6’0″ 170 pounder started his varsity career with a bang. Chris threw for
403 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 27-21 win over Wenatchee to start the season. Not a bad start to your varsity career for a young un-proven sophomore!
Sawyer has been sizzling along all season long for Eisenhower. The pin point passer also lit up rival AC Davis like a Christmas tree, tossing the pigskin around the yard for 308 yards and
4 touchdowns. He completed 24 of 34 passes in the 27-14 victory over the Pirates.
His numbers this season do not lie, they are among the top in all of the great state of Washington. The deadly accurate super sophomore has hit on 130 of 206 passes (63%), good for
2132 yards and 23 touchdowns. Sawyer has thrown only 5 interceptions on the year, which all told gives him a brilliant quarterback rating of 124.9. Which according to statewide stats.com
ranks him 3rd in the state behind only standouts, Brett Rypien of Shadle Park and Reiley Hennessey of Camas. Not bad company at all!
Sawyer has had two veteran senior wideouts to make life easier for him on the gridiron. Ridge Harmon, a crafty 6’0″ 180 pounder has had a big season thus far, grabbing 56 balls for 829 yards
and 14 total touchdowns. 6’4″ high flyer Darius Pati has added 30 catches for 674 yards and 8 scores. Their experience has been huge in the emergence of the young gun Sawyer.
The Cadets sit at 5-3 on the season and will need a solid late season surge from Sawyer and his boys for Ike to make the playoffs out of the Columbia Basin Big Nine league.
